We live in a lovely community and have done now for almost 9 years. Where we lived previously was a beautiful suburb but people only nodded their heads when washing their cars! While i don't wnat to know the ins and oust of everyone I wanted a bit more than that. We both did. I'm so happy like you that we've landed where we did.
I've just been talking to someone this week about that Spring hot weather in lockdown... probably because I have Covid right now 🦠 It reminded me.
I remember Riley 💙
I think you'd make a great mayor, Catherine .. go for it!
Funny, isn't it... I would never have thought it would be something I'd want (probably after living in London for so long), but when it happens it's kinda nice. I suppose it's a bit like being accepted?
Anyway I'm so sorry you've got Covid - my whole family got it a couple of weeks ago (my poor 95 yo dad was hospitalised for a week, he had to be put on oxygen), I hope you feel better soon! I was told there's a lot of new strains going around... my brother was staying down here with my parents and he was HORRIBLY ill, it was his first time getting it so we reckon that he hadn't built up as much of an immunity to it as we have.
Need to get myself better for that mayor application, LOL!!!! 😆😆😆
You could both be mayor and share the duties, Catherine!! LOL
What a lovely post. I've never been a city girl. I lived in a town (Rotherham) until I was 10 and then we moved to the countryside in the Algarve. When I moved out aged 19, it was to the outskirts of a tiny local fisherman's (now very touristy) beach town but when we left there we went straight to the countryside again! I love living here. Some of our closest friends are our neighbours and we often stop and chat to other locals when we're walking the dog.
Thanks Suzy, glad you liked the post... I had no idea you'd lived over there for so long, I just assumed you moved when you were an adult! It's obviously perfect for you if you've never wanted to move back (if you can say "back") to the UK...!
LOVE this, and I'm so happy for you! I grew up on a farm outside a small town (pop.10k), lived away for 20 years, now been back for 20 years. It's a rare day I go to the grocery without seeing someone I know. We farm people will probably be wearing muddy boots at the post office, but I still don't venture out without eyeliner & mascara - because I WILL see people I went to school with, go to church with, attend planning meetings with, etc. I just listed to a podcast talking about the ideal of the British village and what's happened to it - worth a listen: https://www.scribehound.com/lifestyle/s/lifestyle/how-to-save-the-english-village
I have to admit I've gone to the supermarket in my muddy wellies and dog walking outfit, MK - in my younger years I would have gone home to change, LOL! But again, I'm exactly the same about having at least a *little* makeup on because of the fact that I'll almost certainly bump into someone I know.
That podcast sounds very interesting... I'll give it a listen, thank you!
Aww, I love small town life. After moving to a new smallish town last year and feeling a bit lost without a wider social network in the last months, it was healing to read about your journey to feeling home. I'm sure I will get there...with time. Thank you for sharing, Catherine!
Oh, and regarding the paid membership: I already pleaded my support and I expect in no way extra content for that. I'm glad if you establish this as a way to support you as a longterm non-UK reader because your writing is worth the money for me. But since a lot of content moved behind the paywall while many people struggle financially, I always appreciate writers who keep their content free and make support an option. Not sure, what buisness statistics says about this and how other supporters think about the topic but just to let you know and maybe take the pressure off you. :)
I hope your journey to feeling at home is a LOT quicker than mine, Frieda...!
And my goodness, that statement about appreciating my work has made my day - I can't tell you how much that meant to me! Thank you SO much for pledging your support already, I wanted to make sure I was on a roll with being able to provide regular content to justify turning on payments... I'm nearly there. Things have been upside down at home with my parents for a while now and sometimes it's just not possible to plan anything because the unexpected happens so often.
Crikey, where am I from? Born in Edinburgh, grew up partly in East Lothian then suburban London. Many years in cooler inner city London. Throw in two years in Japan and ongoing time working in Stratford-on-Avon. But after eight years in Glasgow, I feel like a Weegie, plus I married one. Your lifestyle seems idyllic and well worth the trade. I enjoy your lovely walks on IG stories.
It’s interesting that you feel the same about Glasgow now as I do about Devon… and yes I do love living down here. The walks will continue when my back gets better, it’s getting there slowly! x

Mr and Mrs Mayor!! 🤣🤣🤣

Your village sounds so lovely. What a gift!
I am in my mid-50s and definitely like a quieter pace of life as I get older. I love to visit the city, but at the end of the day I am done.
Michelle I am 100% with you on the "at the end of the day I am done" bit about the city. Couldn't agree with you more! x

Wow Emily you’re a true mutt! 😉
