Falling over is such a shock to the system, never underestimate the effect, both physically and emotionally on the body. Lovely piece. Am pleased to hear you're on the mend!
I hurt for you. I've often thought "what if I fell and no one saw/helped me"....it's scary. I happy you are on the mend and nothing was broken. This e-mail gives us lots to think about as we go on walks anywhere, even from a grocery store parking lot!
So sorry to hear about your fall. I'm glad you're on the mend. ... Is it too soon to laugh out loud at your niece's cheeky remark?! I hope not! I couldn't help it! What a witty family.
Oh, Catherine, poor you — that sounds so awful 😩 If it helps at all, I think it’s just human nature to want someone to come and look after you, or even just check on you, when you’ve hurt yourself. (I feel like that when I stub my toe, never mind hurting myself as badly as you did!) So sorry no one was there to help — I really hope you’re on the mend now!
In my case I was 48ish, my 40kg rottie and I were on the way out. She was convinced she saw a cat, I'm not convinced, put that together with a december frost (so slipper path) and a metal gatepost concreted into the ground and it's safe to say no gateposts were hurt in the process.
Me on the other hand, probably hit said gatepost (although, I have zero recollection of this), and the next thing I know is I'm lying totally winded on the ground, holding on to another dog who has zero road sense and shouting for my husband who was at the back of the house changing the wheels on the car. Did he hear me? Did he buggery! Did anybody else cone to my rescue? Did they buggery (to be fair, no-one came by at that moment). So, after a few minutes, I got my breath back, found my (now broken) glasses and pulled myself together and got up.
Yes, the shock is real, I had a shower and an early night.
Next day, I turned up for work as usual (I work in a hospital), despite not being able to move my arm properly. A collegue asked her other half (orthopaedic surgeon) to have a look and the ultrasound suggested a fracture, but thankfully no ligament damage. X-ray confirmed said fracture. And I'm left wondering what idiot (me) wears a sweater that wasn't the easiest to get on and off (5 times total) when there's an injured shoulder in the mix?
Collar and cuff for three weeks, and hosting both Christmas and New Year, and no dog walks (me, not the dog) for about six weeks is how the story ended.
Hi Catherine, I feel your pain, but am considerably older than you, but don't really feel old most of the time, I just turned 68 on July 23rd. When my 25 pound pooch sees a bunny or squirrel he turns into a 100 pound pooch. All that being said...as Bette Davis once said, "old age ain't for sissies." Boy, ain't that the truth!!
Crikey, Catherine, you came a proper cropper!! Yikes!! 😳 I hope you heal quickly... You turned the experience into a cracking piece of writing and reflection, however. It really made me think. Thank you for sharing x
This is like reading my holiday story. I fell last week in Cyprus only I did break my fall with my hand and I am in plaster after having surgery whilst on holiday to pin my wrist so thank your lucky stars..........my fall was witnessed by my family thankfully. I totally get the making you feel old headline though............I feel exactly the same even though it was freak thing that happened. i get it totally !!
oh poor you, it sounds quite scary. I hope you mend soon. You know you are old when people refer to you as having "had a fall", rather than just falling over! I am now extra careful to try and avoid that at all costs!!!
Ouch!! At least you got home and did all the right things. I'm still in the space of being humiliated. I fell about a year ago. I was going across a zebra crossing and tried to overtake 2 buggies in front. I jumped onto the kerb and tripped. I was hugely embarrassed and got up as quickly as I could. I was wearing leggings, had just been to Pilates, and tore a hole in the knee. A woman did ask if I was OK, but I was afraid of being seen as old/frail and just legged it.
Glad you're on the mend now! Last year I fell over (as in face planted the pavement) in Cheltenham. I was wearing stupid platform trainers and tripped over an uneven paving slab. My daughter laughed like a drain, several other people came to my aid looking rather more concerned. I hurt my knee and my pride. My family now describe me as 'having had a fall' while I'm still clinging on to the 'I fell over' description!!
Last year I was walking to the gym and i tipped and went smack down onto the pavement. At first I didn't realised what happened to me, I could see I was bleeding but thought it was a nose bleed. I couldn't get up so i sitting on the pavement trying to make sense what just happened. A kind woman came over, gave me a tissues as she was saying my forehead was bleeding (not my nose) and rang for an amburlance. The annoying thing is that I didn't bring my phone with me so I couldn't contact anyone, I had to ask this lady to borrow her phone and use it to call my husband - when i went to A&E she was still corrsponding with my husband and kindly told him what happened to me.
I grazed my legs and forehead but broken my arm/elbow so my husband had to help me get dressed and wash my hair.etc. I was in a sling for 2 months and i was due to be a bridemaid for my friend wedding, I promised her that by the time of the wedding I will have it off - and yes by the time of the wedding my arm was semi healed and no sling.
I still can't bend my arm completely straight now.
Sorry to hear about your fall. I hope you are ok. xx
